Canon Printer Not Found on Wi-Fi in Windows 11? Check These First

Windows 11 may fail to discover a Canon printer even when the printer is switched on. That does not always mean the printer is defective. The issue may be a network mismatch, a connection-mode setting, or an incomplete setup. Use these checks in order, before deleting drivers or resetting the printer. The menus vary across Canon PIXMA, MAXIFY, and other product lines.

First, identify which Wi-Fi connection your Canon printer is using

Home router Wi-Fi

For normal home-network printer discovery, the computer and printer must be on networks that allow them to communicate.

Wireless Direct

A direct printer connection can work without joining the home router. Windows on your normal Wi-Fi may not discover it in this mode.

These are simplified examples; supported modes and setup menus vary by Canon model.

Before changing settings: Keep your Wi-Fi password private, save open work and avoid factory resets. For device-specific buttons, menu names or updates, consult the manufacturer's instructions for your exact model.

It worked until the router was replacedCheck the new network name and password before changing Windows settings.

1. Check for a printer error first

Check the display or indicator lights for paper jams, empty supplies or an active error. Address any error indicated by the printer. Turn it on and allow it to finish its startup sequence before trying Windows again.

2. Check which connection mode the Canon printer is using

On supported models, look for the Wi-Fi or network status on the printer's screen. A printer in Wireless Direct mode may connect a phone or computer directly but may not be joined to your home's router Wi-Fi. If you want ordinary home-network printing, use the printer's wireless-LAN setup for your router. Your model's manual has the exact menu sequence.

3. Compare the router and printer's Wi-Fi settings

Check that the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password are correct, especially if you recently changed routers. Many printers support only certain Wi-Fi bands or security modes; consult the exact model's manual rather than assuming it supports every 5 GHz or WPA3-only network. Move the printer near the router while testing. Avoid resetting your router or disabling its security to make a printer connect.

4. Verify the computer is on the right network

Make sure the Windows PC uses the same trusted home network as the printer—not a guest Wi-Fi, visitor network, or an isolated hotspot. If your home router keeps guest devices separate, Windows discovery may fail. Try opening a normal website on the PC to establish that its network connection is working.

Quick test: if a phone can print through Wireless Direct but the PC on your home router cannot detect the printer, check whether the printer also joined the router network. Do not switch off firewall or security software merely to test discovery.

5. Look for the printer in Windows 11

Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners and choose Add device. Give Windows time to search. If the printer is already listed, select it and try a test print rather than creating duplicate entries. Windows menu labels may change with updates.

6. Use Canon's setup instructions for your exact model

Find your model label on the printer and follow Canon's official setup or manual, rather than downloading a generic “driver fixer.” Canon's manuals may recommend its network setup utility for discovery problems on supported models. Use only the tool listed for your model and operating system. Canon's TR7000-series troubleshooting manual, for example, recommends checking router power, computer connectivity, printer Wi-Fi status and signal before trying the IJ Network Device Setup Utility. These are examples rather than universal steps.

7. If it worked previously, check whether its network details changed

After a router replacement or changed network configuration, a saved Windows printer entry may refer to an old network address. On models that support it, print or view the printer's network information and compare it with the printer entry in Windows. Record the old configuration before making changes.

8. Re-add the printer only after the network checks

If the Canon printer is connected to the correct network but Windows still cannot print, follow Canon's model-specific setup instructions to remove an obsolete printer entry and re-add it. Do not delete unrelated printers or factory-reset the device just to try a quick fix.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Canon printer have to be on the same Wi-Fi as my laptop?

For normal local-network discovery, both usually need to be on a network that permits them to communicate. Guest networks and device isolation can prevent detection.

Why can my phone print but my Windows PC cannot?

The phone may use a different connection method or network, or Windows may have a stale printer entry. First compare the network names and the printer's selected connection mode.

Why can I see my Canon printer's Wi-Fi symbol but not find it in Windows?

The symbol may show wireless capability rather than successful communication with your home router. Check the printer's displayed wireless network status or network information report for your exact model.

Should I install a third-party printer repair tool?

No. Start with Windows settings and the support material for your exact Canon model.
