Printer Printing Faded or Streaked Pages? 9 Checks Before Replacing Supplies
If your printer is producing faded text, streaked pages, missing lines or smudged prints, the best fix depends on what the defect looks like and whether you have an inkjet or laser printer. Horizontal white bands can have different causes from a dark vertical line. A streak on a copy may even come from the scanner glass rather than the printing mechanism.
This guide covers general home and office printer problems, including HP, Canon, Epson and Brother devices. Start with one small test page and follow the least disruptive steps. Exact printer maintenance menus and cleaning procedures vary by model.

Text or colors are much lighter than expected. Check draft mode, supply levels and the device's diagnostic report.
Gaps across printed lines may point to inkjet nozzle issues or a model-specific print mechanism problem.
A continuous line down the page may need paper-path, scanner or toner/drum diagnosis, depending on the device.
Illustrations are simplified examples, not actual manufacturer diagnostic patterns.
Quick symptom checklist
| What you see | Best first check |
|---|---|
| Everything prints pale or gray | Step 2: quality mode and supplies |
| Horizontal white bands on inkjet prints | Steps 3–4: nozzle test and carefully controlled cleaning |
| Dark vertical stripe, especially on copies | Step 6: compare print-only and copied pages |
| Ink smudges, damp-looking paper or toner rubs off | Steps 1, 5 and 7: paper/media type and printer-specific troubleshooting |
| Only one application produces poor output | Step 8: document and printer driver settings |
1. Use the right paper and load it properly
Start with clean, dry paper recommended for your printer. Humid, curled or incompatible media can reduce print quality, cause smears or lead to feeding problems. Fan and reload paper only as your manufacturer's instructions recommend, and use the correct tray and print-side orientation for specialty paper.
In Windows 11, choose the actual paper type in the printer's Printing preferences. Printing on photo paper while the driver is set to plain paper—or the reverse—may change ink application and the printer's behavior. Test one page with appropriate plain paper before replacing hardware.
2. Check draft mode, print quality, and ink or toner status
- In the app, select Print and verify the intended printer is selected.
- Open Printer properties or Preferences, if available.
- Check whether Draft, Economy or Toner Save is enabled; such modes may intentionally produce lighter output.
- Set a suitable Normal or Standard quality option for the paper and print again.
- Check the ink or toner status, displayed warnings, and any visible EcoTank minimum-level marks using the manufacturer's instructions.
Supply-level estimates are not always precise. Do not buy or install a replacement merely because a single document looks faint; use a printer diagnostic page to narrow down the problem.
3. Print the printer's own diagnostic or nozzle-check page
A printer-generated diagnostic page helps distinguish an issue with the printer itself from a specific Windows document. On many inkjet printers, the maintenance menu offers a Nozzle Check or Print Quality Report. On some laser printers, look for a printer status, supplies or quality diagnostic page. Use the exact menu sequence in your printer manual.
- Load suitable plain paper.
- From the printer's control panel or official utility, select its built-in print-quality test.
- Inspect whether the black and color patterns are complete, faded, or missing sections.
- Keep the page as a comparison for the next step.
If the device's built-in print looks clean but a particular document does not, skip maintenance cycles and check the app, document and driver settings in step 8.
4. For an inkjet with missing nozzle lines, clean only as directed
If an inkjet nozzle-check pattern shows missing lines, your manufacturer's ordinary print-head cleaning procedure may help. Follow its official steps, then print another nozzle test and compare results. Stop once the pattern is satisfactory.
Cleaning consumes ink and excessive cleaning can be wasteful. Some manufacturers specify waiting periods or maximum cycles; do not assume the same schedule applies to every Epson, Canon, HP or Brother printer. In particular, intensive or Power Cleaning modes may consume substantial ink and have additional requirements.
Do not pour cleaning fluid into a printer, forcibly move the carriage, wipe nozzles with sharp objects, or interrupt a cleaning cycle. For an Epson printer specifically missing black output, see our Epson black ink troubleshooting guide.
5. Distinguish ink smearing from toner that does not adhere
If the page is wet-looking or ink smears immediately after leaving an inkjet printer, verify the print medium and its settings. Let specialty photo media dry according to its instructions; don't touch freshly printed areas. If printed toner can be rubbed off a laser page, do not try an inkjet head-cleaning procedure: that is a different type of printing technology.
For toner-based printers, confirm that the paper and media-weight settings match the supported paper. If the issue persists, stop and consult the model's official guide, especially before inspecting a toner cartridge, drum or fuser assembly.
6. If a stripe appears on copies, check the scanner separately
Try printing a document directly from the computer. Then try copying a clean original on a multifunction printer. If a line appears only on copies or scans but not on direct print jobs, the scanning path may be responsible. On devices with an automatic document feeder, marks on the narrow scanner glass strip can produce a continuous line in copied documents.
Consult the printer manual before cleaning any scanner glass. Turn the device off if instructed, use the recommended soft cloth, avoid spraying cleaning liquid directly into the scanner, and never scrape glass or internal surfaces. HP's print-quality guidance distinguishes copy-only streaks from defects appearing in direct printing.
7. For laser printers, follow the toner and drum diagnostics
Laser printers use toner and often have replaceable consumables such as cartridges or drums, depending on model. Faded areas and repetitive streaks can involve supplies, paper, environmental conditions or a print mechanism that requires service. Check the exact model's supply status and official diagnostic page first.
Do not open sealed cartridges, shake toner into the air, remove covers around the fuser or touch internal transfer parts without explicit manufacturer's instructions. Toner dust can be irritating, and certain internal components may be very hot. If a manufacturer-approved maintenance action does not resolve the issue, contact support.
8. If the printer's test page looks normal, check Windows and the document
If a built-in diagnostic page prints correctly, examine the app and print preferences rather than repeatedly servicing the printer:
- Try a one-page text document from a different app.
- Check the correct printer, paper size, print quality, grayscale/color and media settings.
- If the problem began after a driver update, check the exact model's supported Windows 11 driver at the manufacturer's official support site.
- Compare the original digital document with what prints: a pale image or low-resolution scan may remain pale even with good ink.
For totally blank output, see our blank-pages troubleshooting guide. For a software problem, try printer driver unavailable in Windows 11.
9. Stop troubleshooting when the problem suggests hardware service
If the printer-generated quality report still has large missing areas, repetitive dark lines, or permanent streaks after the exact manufacturer-recommended procedure, further cleaning or random driver changes may not help. Keep a sample page, record the printer model and supplies, and seek model-specific support. Avoid repeated deep cleaning or replacing several consumables without evidence.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my printer print faded text even though ink is available?
Economy settings, a mismatch between paper and print preferences, unreliable supply indicators or problems with the print mechanism can cause faint output. Check a built-in diagnostic page before buying supplies.
What causes horizontal white lines across printed pages?
On an inkjet printer, missing nozzle lines can produce horizontal gaps, but other causes are possible. Print a nozzle-check pattern and consult the manual. On a laser printer, use its own print-quality diagnostic steps rather than inkjet maintenance.
Are dark vertical streaks always caused by low ink?
No. Vertical streaks can involve paper, a toner/drum component or, if they appear only when copying, the scanner glass. Compare a direct print with a copy to narrow down the cause.
Can the wrong paper cause streaking or smudges?
Yes. An unsupported paper finish, damp paper, incorrect media settings or unsuitable paper weight can affect how ink dries or toner bonds to the page.
Should I run deep printhead cleaning several times?
No. Follow the exact manufacturer schedule. Intensive cycles use more ink and may have minimum ink levels, rest periods or maintenance limitations. Start with a nozzle test and ordinary cleaning only when indicated.
Will reinstalling the Windows printer driver fix streaks?
Not usually if the printer's own built-in diagnostic page is also streaked. A driver check makes more sense when hardware tests look good but one computer or application prints poorly.
